What Makes HSP’s LB7 Cold Air Intake Perform Better?
Are you looking to get a better throttle response while maintaining cooler temperatures under your hood? Then look no further because at HSP Diesel, we have spent years engineering the solution with our LB7 Cold Air Intake for 2001–2004 Chevrolet/GMC Duramax trucks (102-HSP). As we dive deeper into this article, we will discuss why proper airflow matters for your engine, how the stock intake restricts performance, and the advantages HSP’s LB7 intake brings.
Why proper airflow matters in your truck
Imagine running a long-distance race while breathing through a plastic straw. Regardless of how strong your stride is or how good your form is, the restricted airflow would negatively impact your race. With the straw, you could potentially run into problems like overheating faster, dehydration, and body exhaustion, resulting in injury. Not to mention that this could affect your speed, being the single reason why you lost the race. It goes without saying that getting the proper oxygen levels is important in order to make sure that you are reaching your full potential.
And the same thing happens with your engine when you don’t have an adequate intake.
The 2001-2004 LB7 Duramax relies on airflow to create the perfect measurements of air and fuel into the cylinders. This perfect mixture will allow the engine to regulate temperatures and keep the turbocharger operating smoothly. When airflow is restricted, performance is the first thing to suffer. Throttle response becomes sluggish, exhaust gas temperatures rise, and critical components of your engine are forced to work harder than necessary, potentially resulting in damage.
How the Factory LB7 Intake Restricts Performance
If you are using a factory air intake, you are essentially “running with a straw” (see “Why proper airflow matters in your truck” section to understand reference) as it is only pulling air from a single source- the fender pocket.
While this does pass automotive inspections for daily driving, it is not ideal for long-term driving, towing, or maximizing the potential of your truck. The factory components are meant for the very basics of driving performance, and if you try to push the limits on this intake, the potential problems are as follows:
- Black Smoke from the exhaust (unspent fuel)
- Power Loss making the truck drive more Sluggish (Slower throttle response)
- Reduced fuel efficiency (you will need to fill up on fuel more often)
- Increased stress on the truck leading to more damages. (ex. Injectors, turbocharger, internal engine parts)
Another key point to note about the factory air intake is that it was built with tighter bends in the tubing, making it less aerodynamic. This disruption of airflow makes it harder for the air to access the turbo, which ultimately can also lead to problems long-term.
Advantages of HSP’s LB7 Cold Air Intake
The advantage of using HSP’s Cold Air Intake is that it was engineered to eliminate the common problems found in the stock air intakes. Let's break it down:
Multiple locations for Air
Instead of pulling air from one location, we invented a system that is more open, so it can pull air from three different sources:
- Behind the headlight
- The fender pocket
- The wheel well
This increased supply of air in the chamber helps your truck deliver more consistent boost pressure, improved combustion, and it provides quicker throttle responses. It can also improve fuel efficiency—meaning fewer fill-ups—while giving you the confidence to tow or race without worry. To keep it simple, when your engine breathes better, it performs better.
Heat Shield Cover
More air is always a good thing—but only when it’s properly controlled. That’s why the HSP cold air intake is engineered with a heat shield cover surrounding the air filter. This added feature creates a protective barrier that blocks unwanted engine heat and helps maintain consistent, accurate performance. The result? Colder, denser air that will allow your intake to deliver the air to your truck that it deserves.

Intake tube
One of the standout features of the HSP LB7 cold air intake is its 4½" mandrel-bent tubing. Mandrel bending allows the tubing to be formed without creases, folds, or diameter reduction, ensuring maximum airflow. Scaled precisely to factory specifications, the HSP air intake is designed for easy installation, with no modifications or tuning required.

Another benefit of the HSP Intake tubing is that it is constructed from aluminized steel. This material provides increased durability against dents, scratches, and other imperfections while withstanding the temperature fluctuations a vehicle entails. Additionally, aluminized steel offers improved resistance to corrosion so you can enjoy your vehicle for years to come.
Silicone boots
At HSP, our high-strength silicone 4.5”-3.5” reducer boot (RFB-496-RFAB) provides a secure, leak-free seal while withstanding extreme temperatures. Unlike standard rubber alternatives, these boots retain their flexibility and durability over time, ensuring a more consistent airflow and reliable performance.

Appearance
It’s often said that function matters more than looks—but why not have both? At HSP, we pride ourselves on delivering performance and power while maintaining a cutting-edge look, made possible through our powder-coating options. This lightweight finish adds a bold pop of color to your engine bay without adding unnecessary weight.
Beyond aesthetics, a powder-coated finish protects your intake from scratches while giving your engine bay the visual impact to catch a judge’s eye at any car show. So, what do you need to know about ordering colors? We offer three categories to choose from:
- Raw- For customers who own their own custom coating equipment
- Standard Colors- You receive quicker shipping however, there is only 9 color options to choose from (Illusion Blueberry, Illusion Cherry, Illusion Purple, Flag Red, Kingsport Grey, Polar White, Silk Satin Black, M&M Orange, and Ink Black)
- Custom Colors - Endless possibilities on the colors that you can choose from however you need to call in advance due to the fact that we only do these per special request.
If you would like to read more about our Powder coating options, we have a page on our website that goes over everything, HSP Powder Coat Page, but if you need additional support, you can always shoot us an email or give us a call (email and phone number at the bottom of the article).

Sound
When you swap the factory intake to an HSP one, it is important to note that you will hear a louder, more aggressive sound from your truck and turbo; it's completely normal. A factory intake is designed to restrict sound and mask your turbo; we HSP want to hear that turbo sing.
Filter
The 4.5” Round Oiled Air Filter (RFB-413-RFAB) is designed to maximize airflow and boost performance for your LB7. Made with high-strength fibers, this reusable filter is easy to clean and built to last. For maintenance, the S&B Filters Precision II Cleaning & Oil Kit (SBF-88-000X) is a solid choice. It's very easy to use, and it will essentially protect your turbo from harmful particles. Another great option for more dusty environments is the HSP filter wrap (RFB-413-F-RFAB). The filter wrap slides over the top of your air filter like a glove, adding an extra layer of protection against dust, bugs, and debris. By using these methods, you are getting cleaner air, which means better combustion and less wear on the expensive engine components and a longer lifespan on your truck.

No “BS” Warranty
At HSP, we firmly stand behind every product we make with our No BS Limited Lifetime Warranty. If your part fails, breaks, leaks, has a manufacturing defect, has a recall, and/or something is missing from the packaging, we’ll replace it—simple as that. We will cover the shipping costs for this as well. All you need to do is file a claim with our team. How do you file a claim? The original purchaser must email sales@hspdiesel.com and provide the following information:
- A copy of your original order (A PDF or screenshot is perfect. Make sure your name, order number, and item details are clearly visible)
- A photo of the issue (Make sure it's a clear, well light image that displays the problem)
- Current shipping address (Include full name, street, city, state, and ZIP so we can
get replacements or parts out fast) - Vehicle year/engine and a short description explaining the problem
After you file a claim, we will contact you if any additional information is needed to help move things along faster.
